What is soft tissue therapy?
Soft tissue therapy is the manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, ligaments, and tendons. This hands-on process works to reduce tension and pain, as well as speed up your healing process.
If you are experiencing chronic or acute muscle pain, one likely cause of this pain is that your soft tissues have sustained an injury. You may not have been involved in an accident, and perhaps you may not notice that an injury has occurred. This is because injury is not always caused by trauma. Even if you are careful and take good care of your body, years of repetitive use can cause soft tissues to develop micro-traumas and tears that lead to the build-up of scar tissue.
Soft tissue therapies at Integrated Health Solutions
Scar tissue in the muscles can severely limit mobility and cause extreme pain. In order to restore movement to these muscles and remove the pain you are experiencing, the team at Integrated Health Solutions offers a number of soft tissue therapies that have been proven to break up scar tissue, allowing you to return to your favorite activities.
A common treatment method IHS doctors use is the Active Release Technique (ART). This treatment is different from all other muscle and soft tissue treatment programs in that it works to eliminate the cause of your pain rather than just alleviating the symptoms. ART is an evidence-based soft tissue therapy that requires doctors to have a more in-depth and thorough knowledge of the human body and its function in comparison to other soft tissue therapies. By using coordinated muscle massage techniques, an ART-certified doctor can restore proper functioning not just of one body part, but of the entire muscle or tissue group it belongs to.
In addition to ART, we employ the techniques of the Graston Method®. The Graston Technique® is patented technology used by clinicians which, much like ART, works to break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. Where ART typically involves a practitioner using his or her hands, the Graston Method® uses specialized instruments to analyze, diagnose, and treat areas suffering from soft-tissue injury or chronic pain.
IHS soft tissue therapies may also include traditional acupuncture and dry needling. Though these two therapies are similar, acupuncture involves gently inserting very thin filaments along the body’s meridian lines, whereas dry needling involves inserting thin filaments slightly deeper into muscles, fascia, and joints to re-calibrate and relax these parts. Both treatments can facilitate improved energy flow, reduced pain and tension, and a general restoration of tissue function. We offer these treatments as a way to pursue whole-body rejuvenation and deep tissue healing.

What to expect from soft tissue therapies at IHS
At Integrated Health Solutions, we diagnose and treat soft tissue injuries in many different ways. Common solutions begin with a thorough functional analysis and are followed by a combination of physical rehabilitation, the Active Release Technique, the Graston® Method, and acupuncture.
In order to diagnose soft tissue injuries, Dr. Charbel is certified in Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA). The SFMA method is a standardized clinical model that helps us identify the root cause of the pain you are experiencing. SFMA is not a method to treat pain; rather, it is a tool used to assess and analyze each muscle, ligament and tendon to determine the root cause of the problem. SFMA is unique because, instead of just looking at one muscle group, it evaluates the cause of pain based on how a soft tissue functions together with the whole body. The result is a holistic understanding of the problem in order to find a precise and permanent solution.
Once an assessment has been completed, IHS may offer physical rehabilitation services. This is often the first step in beginning the process of healing soft tissues and involves the use of hands-on movement therapies. Our goal is to synchronize the function of your muscles by breaking down scar tissue and removing fascial restrictions such as scars and inflammation. Physical rehab can restore proper blood flow to the muscles, as well as rehabilitate global movement and joint mechanics.
