Why does your neck hurt?
Whether you are sitting in front of a computer or doing manual labor, neck pain is often the result of poor posture—causing compensatory stress, emotional stress, or a combination of the two.
Postural stress occurs when the head is placed in improper positions for an extended period of time. It is perpetuated by the neck muscles becoming overactive.
A phenomenon known as upper crossed syndrome—defined by forward-head carriage (in relation to the shoulders), hyperextension of the cervical spine, and shortening of the pectorals, upper trapezius, and cervical extensors—will occur in many cases.
This condition inhibits the ability of the deep neck flexors (cervical stabilizing muscles) to function properly, resulting in imbalance and instability.
Symptoms of Upper Cross Syndrome include, but not limited to:
- Neck pain
- Headaches
- Sprain/strain
- Decreased range of motion
- Stiff neck
- TMD
