Hello again, everyone! Many of our patients ask for nutritional advice. I often encourage them to incorporate anti-inflammatory foods and supplements into their diets, this will improve how they feel, and decrease their risk for chronic diseases. Although inflammation is a healthy and necessary process in our body, we need to keep it balanced.

First, let’s begin with what foods you should be incorporating into your diet*:
  • fruits and vegetables
  • fish, chicken, and lean beef
  • herbs and spices
  • organic olive oil and coconut oil
  • raw nuts
  • dark chocolate
  • water and green tea
  • and maybe a glass of red wine
Now that you have an idea of what you can eat, let’s focus on inflammatory foods that should be avoided:
  • wheat, gluten and grains
  • dairy
  • sugar and foods containing sugar
  • artificial sweetener and packaged foods
A good rule to follow is if you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it. I cannot stress enough the importance of avoiding these foods. Sugar, for example, is by far one of the most abused drugs in this country, and yes, I called it a drug. It causes everything from rotting teeth to a variety of illnesses. If you’re still unsure of the foods you should eat, and the foods you should avoid, check out Nutrition Data, which is a free website that allows you to look up  the inflammatory factor of any food.I also recommend incorporating the following supplements into your diet on a daily basis to help reduce inflammation:
  • Multi-Vitamins
  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin D
  • Probiotics
Keep in mind, the goal is not necessarily to avoid all high inflammatory foods, but to bring the diet to a balance.  I am very confident an alteration in your diet will allow a greater control over inflammatory symptoms you might be dealing with.
