At our affordable chiropractic clinic, we highly advocate for an anti-inflammatory and well balanced diet that will aid in improving health and decreasing the risk of many ailments. For years, we have been told that lower blood cholesterol stops heart disease, and thus millions of Americans have been put on dietary restrictions of low fat consumption. However, clinical findings are proving that this theory is no longer scientifically probable.
New evidence is showing that increased inflammation in the arteries is the actual cause of heart disease. Inflammation is the body’s natural defense to foreign invaders such as bacteria, toxins, or viruses, and is needed in these acute phases. However, chronic inflammation is not favorable and actually it is quite harmful. Chronic inflammation can be attributed to the mainstream diet that Americans have been put on for years; it consists of foods low in fats, high in polyunsaturated fat, and carbohydrates. For decades, Americans have been consuming large quantities of processed and packaged foods. According to statistics from the American Heart Association, 75 million Americans suffer from heart disease, 20 million have diabetes, and 57 million have pre-diabetes. The more we consume packaged and processed foods, the more we increase the inflammation in our system and the more chronic and harmful it becomes, instead of beneficial. This type of inflammation is called chronic inflammation, which is caused by repeatedly exposing our bodies to such toxins.
Here is How it Works
Because of our diets, we take in excessive amounts of omega-6 (vegetable oils) as well as highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flour). Consuming excess amounts of omega-6 causes the cell membrane to produce cytokines, which directly causes inflammation. Consuming excessive amounts of sugar results in increased blood sugar levels, because the cells in your body are unable to store excess amounts of sugar. The sugar your body cannot store becomes attached to proteins, which causes injury and inflammation to the blood vessel wall, and is converted to store fat. The stored fat, or excess weight, leads to more inflammation.

The human body was not created to handle all the processed foods that we consume on a daily basis. The only way to stop this vicious cycle is to return our diets to a more natural state. So that means choosing more whole foods, fruits and vegetables, and more fresh unprocessed foods. It is important to understand that everything we have been taught over the years, especially the supposed fact that saturated fat yields heart disease is untrue, and as a whole we need to change our eating habits rather quickly in order to reverse any damage that we have done, and to stop the damage we are about to cause. At our Indianapolis chiropractic clinic, we recommend our patients:
- Eat unprocessed foods
- Eat more omega-3 rich foods, with at least the ratio of 3 times more than omega-6
- Eat more fruits and vegetables
- Follow an anti-inflammatory diet that is similar to the Paleo diet
