In recent years, the Paleo Diet has become quite popular. But, what exactly is it, and what are the benefits?

The Paleo Diet, which is based on the Paleolithic Era, is a diet based on the hunter-gatherer style of eating.  The Paleolithic Era, also referred to as the Old Stone Age, is a prehistoric period of human history that covers roughly 99% of the time humans have occupied Earth.  This era is distinguished by the development of stone tools, which were used for hunting.

Foods to Avoid

Humans in this time period only had the means to eat what they could forage for, such as wild game, nuts and berries.  The Paleo Diet focuses on this same concept, and because of that, following the diet, means you would no longer consume the following foods:

The Benefits

Because going on the Paleo Diet means you do cut out some foods that have significant nutritional value, like grains and legumes, some doctors do not see its benefits. But the Paleo Diet does have many benefits.  In multiple studies conducted, it was found that people on the Paleo Diet had the following health benefits:

  • Weight Loss
  • Smaller Waist Circumference
  • Lower Total Cholesterol
  • Lower Triglycerides
  • Lower Insulin AUC
  • Lower Blood Pressure

If you suffer from symptoms related to inflammation, such as irritable bowel syndrome, or have food intolerances, you should really consider the Paleo Diet. Many of the patients at our affordable chiropractic clinic, who have altered their diets to follow the Paleo concept,  have reported a decrease, and even a complete elimination, in symptoms such as morning congestion, irritable bowel syndrome, skin irritation, among many others.

Getting Started

Unfortunately, our society is quite familiar with short term, fad diets. We want results, and we want them now. However, a fad diet will not bring you long-term health benefits that a lifestyle change can provide. At our Indianapolis chiropractic clinic, we know it isn’t always easy to make a change, especially one as significant as your eating habits; that is why we suggest you ease into the Paleo Diet, making small changes at a time. Gradually developing a Paleo lifestyle, as opposed to diving in all at once, may help you feel less overwhelmed, which will also help you stick with it.
