We made it through the hustle and bustle of the holiday season; perhaps the chaos of it all helped us forget the days were getting shorter, the holiday bills were getting larger, and the temps were dropping. So, here we sit on a dreary February afternoon wondering who keeps bringing the googly eyed blue robe with them to the office.  It just sits there all day, draining the positive energy out of everyone it comes in contact with. Oh the dreaded winter blues are upon us.  Here are five simple ways to help lift your spirits until spring arrives.

1.  Brave the cold to soak up some rays.  Even just a few moments of sunshine will help boost your mood. It may not always be easy to get a daily dose, but try to sneak in a quick, albeit chilly, walk around the block. If the weather isn’t cooperating, soak up some rays by a window in the office while answering emails or taking phone calls. Braving the cold to soak up some rays for just a few minutes a day will help quench your body’s thirst for sunshine.

2.  Bust through the blues with a healthy diet and supplements. Avoiding comfort foods, sugar, and sleep-inducing carbs will help keep the blues at bay during winter months. Consider adding supplements to keep your spirits high, such as Vitamin D, Omega 3’s and fish oils.

3. Send that blue robe floating. Seventy-five percent of Americans do not get enough magnesium in their diets. Low levels of magnesium decrease the production of mood-stabilizing serotonin and melatonin. During a flotation therapy session, your body will absorb magnesium while you float in a sensory deprivation pod filled with about a foot of water, and loaded with over 800 pounds of Epsom salt.

4.  Out perform the winter blues. Exercising will help boost your serotonin levels, which help regulate positive feelings, not to mention it will help keep your waistline from expanding during chilly months. Embrace the season and take up a winter sport, such as cross-country skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, running on a treadmill in front of a window, etc.

5. Freeze away your blues.  Whole body cryotherapy causes the brain to release a higher-than normal level of endorphins. Because of these increased endorphins, as well as increased adrenaline levels after a session, many users report enhanced mood and increased energy thanks to cryotherapy.

We recommend finding what’s best for you, as you combat the winter blues over the next few months. Keep in mind a positive attitude will go a long way until spring arrives.
